Gabriel Maddox How to Get Away With Murder

For five intense seasons, we've followed along, picked up clues, and tried to solve mystery after mystery with attorney Annalise Keating and her marry band of law school interns on ABC's How To Get Away With Murder. With the Viola-Davis starring series returning for its sixth and final season we're sure to be in for a doozy of a wrap up to our favorite high-octane legal drama.

Ahead of the season six premiere, however, we know some of you might not have the time to binge watch five seasons, so we've got you taken care of with a handy refresher course in all things How to Get Away with Murder. But be warned: there are plenty of spoilers ahead.

For the uninitiated, HTGAWM focuses on Annalise Keating, an accomplished attorney (played by the incomparable Viola Davis) who teaches criminal law at the fictional Middleton University in Philadelphia. As we've come to learn, her story is not without its own series of incredulous moments and she is certainly not without her own flaws.

Annalise is married to Sam, whom she met when he was married and treating her as her therapist. Eventually, he left his wife and married Annalise — but the old adage ends up being true, however: how you get him is how you will lose him. Annalise finds that out the hard way when Sam begins to have his own affairs during their marriage.

In the first season, we're also introduced to a group of Annalise's students, most of whom will remain with us throughout the series. They include Michaela Pratt, Asher Millstone, Wes Gibbins, Laurel Castillo and Connor Walsh, all of whom are selected by Annalise to be interns at her law firm. There, they work with her employees, Frank Delfino and Bonnie Winterbottom. Bonnie is an associate lawyer in the firm, and Frank functions as an investigator/whatever Annalise needs him to be at any given moment — including murderer.

Each season revolves around a murder mystery, and in the first season, the murder victims are, first, a Lila Stangard, a sorority girl and student at Middleton who we learn was having an affair with Sam. Speaking of Sam, he's murdered, too!

The stories on HTGAWM are expertly told through the use of flashbacks, showing us details that led up to each murder. In the present day, we see the Keating Five trying to figure things out on their own and, by the end of the first season, we know that Sam had Frank kill Lila, Wes kills Sam (in an act of protection) with the Keating Five as accomplices, and Annalise helped them to cover up the murder. Annalise also discovers Sam's affair with Lila and works to pin her murder on him.

In season two, Annalise and the Keating Five are working to defend a brother and sister who have been accused of murdering their adoptive parents. Wes also spends a good portion of the season trying to find out information about his mother's suicide. He discovers she was a former client of Annalise's. That tangled web also reveals that at the same time Annalise was working a case involving Wes's mother, she was pregnant with her own child, but she subsequently lost the baby in a car crash that was orchestrated by Frank.

(Yes, this show is all kinds of dramatic)

The mystery in season three is the murder of — wait for it — Wes Gibbins. Yes, Wes! Annalise is arrested after an explosion in her home sets it on fire, burning it to the ground, and Wes's body is discovered inside. The remaining interns — now the Keating Five — try to resolve their feelings around both Wes's death and Annalise's arrest.

Frank later confesses to Wes's murder, saying he did it because of a love triangle between himself, Laurel, and Wes. We also learn that Laurel is pregnant with Wes's baby. With the help of Annalise's on again/off again lover, detective Nate, Bonnie and Frank manage to get her freed from jail. We learn that it was Laurel's father who conspired to have Wes killed because he did not approve of their relationship.

The fourth season sees the breakup of the Keating Four. The group takes internships at the law firm of Caplan & Gold, a firm that coincidentally represents Laurel's father, and Laurel hatches a plan to steal evidence from the firm that will incriminate her father. Meanwhile, Laurel's father schemes to take custody of her baby and manages to do so for a time, but he later gives up his custody battle after making a deal with Annalise in exchange for the evidence that has been gathered against him. It doesn't matter, though, as he gets arrested in the season finale.

In a departure from what viewers are accustomed to, season five uses flash forwards to tell the story flash backs. Annalise begins working at Caplan & Gold after winning a highly publicized Supreme Court battle and being courted with multiple job offers.

We are introduced to new second year student, Gabriel Maddox, who we find out is actually the son of Annalise's dead husband, Sam. (See? Drama.) Bonnie and Asher are both working in the D.A.'s office, and Bonnie has begun an affair with ADA Ronald Miller. He is revealed to be the person Bonnie suffocated in the first flash forward of the season.

The group also works to defend Nate's father, Nate Sr., in a case involving an insanity plea. Later, Nate Sr. is murdered, and the mystery surrounding his death will lead us into season six, as does Sam's murder from season one after Oliver Hampton — Connor's computer wiz fiancĂ© — finds out that the FBI is investigating the entire group in the mystery involving Sam's disappearance and death.

By the end of season five we also find out that Laurel's brother, in collusion with the governor, was the mastermind behind the death of Nate Sr.. What's more, Emmett is poisoned in the season finale, and both Laurel and her son turn up missing.

So what can we look forward to in the sixth and final season? We have so many questions!

Who took Laurel's baby? Is Emmett dead? If so, who did it? Will season 6 be the one in which they all get caught? Will they successfully graduate law school? Will they even want to practice law after all of this?

And most importantly, what will the season six mystery be?
